Midwest Classic 2009 - Part Doug PDF Print E-mail

Bryan Youth Wrestling at the Midwest Classic in Kearney Nebraska

First arrival at the Firstier Arena and checking out the place, the trophies and just checking out the facilities. Below are pictures of the wrestling area with Doug in the middle (Left) and the Awards (Right).  If you look at the picture on the left you can see the awards table in the far background.

Being the first time at a tournament in a venue other then a basketball court Doug was excited.

Doug's first opponent was Bitterman from Milford, a kid Doug lost to 8-4 earlier in the year. I was nervous, really nervous due to the fact that Doug had not practiced for three weeks. Doug however seemed ready for business, he won this match against Bitterman 17-2. Now most of the BYW coaches know Doug can have good days and he can also have extremely bad days. It was obviously from this match that he was going to be having a good day.

Doug's second opponent was Otto from Grand Island.  Doug and Ross starting talking before the match, friendly boasting and talking about wrestling and such. Doug again got down to business and pinned Otto in the 3rd period, but Doug was definately dominating the match before the fall occured.

Doug's next opponent was Cortez Holmes from the Exploradories. I warned Doug that Holmes was very fast on his take downs and that he needs to be on the button with his sprawls. Doug lost this match 7-3, but truth is Doug was definately not on his game, could be that last second run for the bathroom got him out of his mindset or the long wait between matches I do not know. Doug could beat this kid, just wasn't in the cards today.

Down to the consolation brackets picking up Bitterman again who fought his way back up after his earlier loss to Doug. This time Bitterman came ready for Doug, it was a very good match.. Doug made some mistakes like not going for his points when he should have, Doug seemed to be dominating only won 4-2.

Wrestling for 3rd and 4th place against Behlen from Lakeview was a pretty good match, Doug definately likes working from the front and won this match 13-2.

Doug is proud of his performance at this tournament, when you consider the competition levels in his bracket and the fact that he hasn't practiced in three weeks. Ronniel Wells from the Omaha Bears was the champion and Cortez Holmes from Exploradories took 2nd and Doug Weidner from Bryan Youth Wrestling got 3rd Place.

Final Bracket
